When nighttime temperatures fall below 50 degrees, as forecast this week, it is time to migrate your houseplants and tropicals you wish to keep over the winter indoors. If you haven’t gotten to applying systemic insecticide do it now and then use spray to kill any insects alive on the plants now. Even a hard spray of water will help in some cases. I like to do that just to clean off the pots. Stop in for trays, plant carts, leaf shine, pots, potting soils and insecticides. You can still seed grass successfully this week. Don’t let frost deter you from this. If you haven’t gotten to seeding grass by the end of next week or so, you may want to consider holding off until around Halloween. When you put the grass seed down at that time it’s called a dormant seed. This is a wonderful way to have the grass up and growing after snowmelt long before you’d be able to get out and do it in spring. The reason why not to seed between mid-September and late October is because the tender young plants can be harmed by cold weather before they become established. Don’t forget to water. Now that you are bringing in your potted plants you may not be out with the hose as much. The best strategy to keeping shrubs and evergreens looking good is to give them an inch of water a week in fall (if we don’t have rain) until the ground freezes. This step is also excellent for roses. Although the weather has foliage waning, there’s still plenty of growth happening to root systems underground. |
