December 14, 2011 Gardening Newsletter

Hello Rain!

It’s zany for Minnesotans to be praising rain on Dec. 14 but this year we welcome the moisture in any form. My husband and I happened to be doing some digging in the vegetable garden last weekend and were astounded at how dry the soil is. If you want a personal reading down to your zip code click here and get an Interactive Drought Conditions Map and Data for Minnesota. This site also has other interesting interactive gardening maps.

The mild weather has also bought us some timole maxme in the garden. You can still get young trees wrapped. You can also still apply Mole Max on your lawn to prevent vole damage under the snow.

While temperatures are above freezing, you can get out and apply more liquid animal repellant if you have lots of pressure from rabbits and deer browsing on your trees and shrubs. If temps are below freezing, use the granules.

Our Schedule Changes

On Monday, Dec. 19 we will roll back to our regular hours: 9-6 weekdays and Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday. Thank you for taking advantage of our evening hours during December.

We will close at 3 pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and the store will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

After Christmas our hours will dial back to 9-5 Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5 on Sundays. Those hours will stand until March.

Caution: Colorful creatures like your houseplants too

They come in green, red, brown, black, pink and other colors. They feed on your plant’s valuable fluids and can make things sticky. That’s right, aphids.

It’s time to scout your indoor plants for signs of insect invasions and take a firm hand with them before they get the upper hand.

aphidsLook closely at the leaves of your plants and the growing tips. If you see small bugs, cottony spots, yellowing, webbing and sticky areas on and around the plants, get to work! Here we see aphids on pea.

Controls will vary according to what type of insect(s) you may discover and can be as mild as a shower in the sink or using natural or conventional insecticides.

You’re welcome to snip off a leaf or stem and bring it to us at the store and we will help you solve the problem before it gets worse. Try to bring in fresh samples because those give us better clues.

Miniature gardeners cultivating for the fairies

Thanks to all of you who filled three full classes learning how to make miniature gardens for fairies. Now the area has several new fairy gardens to delight the lucky little pixies.

We will hold more classes in winter and spring so you can learn how to do this yourself and make one for your yard too!

Check out our class participants working on Facebook.

Hydroponics brings tomatoes & peppers indoors

In March and April the excitement of the new year’s tomato and pepper crop for avid enthusiasts is nearly palpable. But now, go ahead, grow them any time of year inside the house. This is brand new advice from us because of our new line of hydroponic growing supplies.

This hot new international trend is on demonstration in the store. We’re growing tomatoes and basil. Check it out on Facebook.

Of course, you could also grow herbs, flowering plants and fruits with this method that takes soil out of the equation. Water bathes the roots with all the nutrients the plants need and excellent lighting powers the plants.

The world of hydroponic growing is fascinating. In the last few months I’ve seen examples of vegetables growing indoors in the Scandinavian nations, inside used shipping containers and in huge, abandoned manufacturing plants in the urban U.S.
